Palazzo Vecchio & Piazza Signoria TourThe Power & The Glory
Thronged with iconic sculptures from the Renaissance and Ancient Roman Empire, Piazza della Signoria is a veritable open air museum. Michelangelo's David was symbolically placed here in 1504 to defend the newly installed Republic from the tyranny of the exiled Medici family. (The original is now at the Accademia Gallery).
Palazzo Vecchio dominates the square like an impregnable castle. Built in 1299 it was originally the seat of the "people's parliament". In 1540 it became the private palace of Duke Cosimo I de' Medici and his wife Eleonora de Toledo. With its labyrinth of secret rooms and passages alongside vast monumental halls, covered with frescoes celebrating the Medici dynasty, this tour will give you an idea of the power and glory they held for over three hundred years.
